Ingredient supplier and curcumin specialist Sabinsa Corp. (East Windsor, NJ) has joined a new trade association, the Global Curcumin Association (GCA), as a founding board member. According to a press release, Sabinsa’s position as a “highly regarded global ingredient supplier with a broad scientific and intellectual property platform to support its products, including Curcumin C3 Complex, C3 Reduct, and Uc3 Clear,” was a natural choice to kick off the curcumin-focused group. The GCA is part of Trust Transparency Consulting’s mission to create new, single-ingredient trade associations. Trust Transparency’s trade association incubator program was first announced in May, with a stated goal “to protect and promote key single ingredients to and through all levels of the supply chain.”

The key goals of the Global Curcumin Association include establishing a best practices and a recognized, third-party baseline for ingredient quality, identity, and appropriate category definitions and standards, says Trust Transparency’s press release. In addition, it says, the association will work to promote and support science and education through all supply chain levels as well as in customer, consumer, and influencer communities.

“Sabinsa has worked very hard to promote and protect the integrity of the curcumin market from adulteration and IP infringement, while fostering research and promoting benefits, and can thus attest to the efforts it requires,” Shaheen Majeed, president, Sabinsa Worldwide, commented in a press release. “When presented with the opportunity to work together with other legitimate curcumin suppliers to protect the market, the decision was easy.”

Len Monheit, managing partner, Trust Transparency, added that Sabinsa’s decision to join the GCA early on is significant for the fledgling incubator programs. “With Sabinsa’s leadership role in advocating best practices, their decision to be a founding board member of GCA validates our conviction that visionary companies see value in banding together with like-minded businesses to promote and protect a significant category,” he said. “We are eager to begin executing the programs we have developed to support the rapidly growing curcumin category, even as we build out the rest of the membership with other companies committed to solid science, adherence to intellectual property law, and quality systems.”

Trust Transparency also points to a Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) Supplement Business Report from 2015 which cites curcumin as one of its “Top 5 Growth Ingredients.” In addition, the 2017 NBJ Raw Materials Report lists curcumin as the fourth-bestselling herbal product on the market, with consistent double-digit annual sales growth over the past decade.
