In a recent news release, Mibelle AG Biochemistry announced results from a recently published study1 on the effects of ingredient MintyBright Nu for skin health. As the abstract and press release explain, hyperpigmentation from an overproduction of melanin and exposure to environmental stressors can result in dark spots and uneven skin tone, and conventional treatments can involve synthetic skin-lightening treatments and topical products. Looking into dietary supplements as an alternative treatment, the study, “The Efficacy of Apple Mint Extract as a Nutraceutical Supplement for Skin Brightening: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Study,” was published in the Global Journal of Nutrition & Food Science in February 2025.

The in vitro section of the study tested the extract’s effects on stimulating genes involved in response to stresses. The results demonstrated potential for nutraceutical support in skin brightening and skin’s natural defenses by helping up-regulate heat shock proteins, which protect cells from damage. “This study highlights the anti-oxidative and anti-melanogenetic effects of an apple mint extract in cell models,” the researchers stated in the discussion section. “The observed antioxidant properties demonstrated by the extract suggest it may be effective in neutralizing free radicals and reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing oxidative stress-induced skin damage and discoloration.”

The in vivo section of the study involved 110 healthy female participants ages 25–60 with mild to moderate fine lines, wrinkles, and skin spots and a phototype III–V. Participants received either 150 mg capsules of the apple mint extract or the placebo daily in the morning for 84 days. The botanical apple mint (“apple mint extract” as MintyBright Nu) had been selected for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Skin lightness and brightening was measured, along with skin tone and evenness.

Results at 84 days include:

  • Skin lightening mean increased significantly compared to placebo
  • Mean individual typology angle (for evaluating skin brightness) was significantly increased, while the placebo did not show an effect
  • Melanin variation (a parameter for skin tone evenness) was significantly inhibited, which matched the effects of the positive control kojic acid

There were no serious adverse effects reported and the product was generally well tolerated. “This study evidences that botanical extracts can be utilized as natural, safe and effective actives to combat hyperpigmentation and enhance overall skin health,” the researchers concluded.

As noted in the press release, MintyBright Nu can be used in various applications, including beauty from within, and is available as a powder extract.
