Ribbon blenders from Charles Ross & Son Company (Hauppauge, NY)-which are well-suited for the rapid blending of dry powders, granules, paste-like materials, solid-liquid supsensions, pellets, and other solid forms-are now available with several new optional features. These include new scrapers, shaft seals, and agitator shafts.

Pictured above is the model 42N-120SS ribbon blender from Charles Ross, which clocks in at a 120 cu. ft. of stainless steel. It is now available with the following new features:

  • Solid agitator shaft with “precision-formed ribbons,” which have angled leading edges that prevent material build up
  • Air-purged mechanical shaft seals with replaceable Teflon seal faces, which are FDA approved
  • Scrapers are welded to the blender’s spokes and ribbons, ensuring a 1/8 in. close tolerance to the end walls. The trough corners are also “radiused” as a standard, further eliminating dead space.
  • Clear view polycarbonate on the cover and shaft guards, which is FDA approved. The cover may also include ports for ingredient additions, lights, spray systems, and venting or vacuum transfer, Charles Ross adds. The clear nature of the polycarbonate allows operators to safely view the batch and charge raw materials while the blender’s agitators are in motion.
  • Pneumatically-operated spherical disc valve, which “provides a large opening and minimizes dead space.” It also allows for customized discharge connections to “perfectly mate” with a user’s material handling system.

Ross ribbon blenders use a horizontal agitator to blend materials, complete with inner and outer helical ribbons in a U-shaped trough. The ribbons are pitched to precisely move materials in a balanced axial and radial flow pattern, the firm explains.
