A recent study1 found that a proprietary formula containing Vitex negundo and Zingiber officinale (Ginger) offered relief from exercise-induced knee joint discomfort. In the study, 40 adults between the ages of 20 and 60 with self-reported pain scores ≤ 30 mm at rest and ≥ 60 mm post-exercise on a 100 mm visual analog scale were randomized to receive either 200 mg twice daily of the herbal formula or placebo for five days. The formula, manufactured by ENovate Biolife (Wilmington, DE) is marketed as Muvz.
The primary outcome investigated by researchers was the time to achieve meaningful pain relief, defined as 40% reduction in post-exertion pain VAS score from baseline, after a single dose of intervention on day one compared to placebo. Results showed that subjects taking the herbal formula achieved meaningful pain relief in an average of 3.38 hours, with 32.5% of participants taking the formula achieving relief after a single dose on day one compared to none in the placebo group.
Researchers also observed significant intergroup difference in the secondary outcomes which were post-exertion pain intensity differences at two, three and four hours as well as time-weighted sum of pain intensity differences over four hours after a single dose on day one. According to the study, 95% of the subjects taking the proprietary formula experience some degree of pain relief within two hours. Only 37.5% of the placebo group experienced relief within in this timeframe.
