A recent study published in Food & Nutrition Research1 found that a proprietary blend of Tamarindus indica seeds and Curcuma longa rhizome extracts mitigated joint pain and improved joint function in subjects with knee osteoarthritis. In the study, 150 male and female subjects between 40 and 70 years old were randomized to receive either placebo, 250 mg of the blend of Tamarindus indica seeds and Curcuma longa rhizome extracts (TamaFlex from NXT USA), or 1000 mg of a blend of C. longa and Boswellia serrata extracts (CLBS). Each was consumed after breakfast over 30 consecutive days.

The primary outcome measure was the improvement in total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores. Researchers also evaluated joint function and inflammatory biomarkers. Results showed that subjects taking TamaFlex saw significant reductions in WOMAC scores and improvements in musculoskeletal function compared to baseline and placebo. For example, subjects taking TamaFlex experienced reductions in knee pain and improved musculoskeletal function after five days of supplementation, while subjects taking CLBS did not show the same level of early efficacy in pain and function scores. The TamaFlex group also experienced significant reductions in serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and urinary C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type II collagen (CTX-II).

“Where our previous studies focused on identifying that joint relief was fast-acting and long-lasting, this third study provides concrete data supporting our novel approach to joint health and the impact it has on improving participants’ quality of life and physical capabilities,” said Eric Anderson, managing director, NXT USA, in a press release. “The study is large and comprehensive, with physician assessment, physical tests and biomarkers providing subjective and objective evidence of efficacy. This is truly unique.”
