Ingredion (Westchester, IL), has added two new pea-based ingredients for pet food to its portfolio as a result of its new joint venture with Verdient Foods announced last December to make pulse-based concentrates and flours. The new ingredients are Purity P 1304, a pea starch, and Vitessence Pulse 1550, a pea protein concentrate. These ingredients can help replace other starches and flours as well as add protein. They are suited for pet products such as canned food, gravies, dry kibble, treats, biscuits, and more.
“The new ingredients provide superior formulation functionality while helping manufacturers meet consumer demand for grain-free, clean-label pet foods with an enhanced nutritional profile," the company says in a press release.
Both Purity P 1304 pea starch and Vitessence Pulse 1550 pea protein concentrate can help provide texture and structure, improve water and fat binding, and provide thickening and gelling in pet food. Purity P 1304 pea starch helps with improved ingredient binding, while Vitessence Pulse 1550 can increase the efficiency of extrusion and injection molding, and enhance protein content, the company says.
