A recent study found that supplementation with a bioavailable form of curcumin, called Curcuwin Ultra+ from OmniActive Health Technologies, helps support joint comfort and function in as little as five days for people with mild knee osteoarthritis.
A recent study published in the Journal of Orthopedic Research and Therapy1 found that supplementation with a bioavailable form of curcumin, called Curcuwin Ultra+ from OmniActive Health Technologies, helps support joint comfort and function in as little as five days for people with mild knee osteoarthritis. In the study, 134 subjects were evenly distributed in three groups, randomized to receive either 250 mg of the curcumin extract, 500 mg of the curcumin extract, or placebo daily for 84 days. The primary outcome researchers evaluated was the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index. The secondary outcomes measured were Visual Analogue Scale for pain (VAS - pain), Knee Extension and Flexion Muscle Strength, Range of Motion (ROM) and 6 Minutes’ Walk Test (6MWT). All outcomes were measured at baseline, day 5, 28, 56, and 84.
Results showed that subjects taking the highest dosage of the curcumin extract saw a significant improvement in WOMAC scores, VAS pain, walking performance, as well as ROM for knee extension and muscle strength by day 5, compared to placebo. Both groups assigned the curcumin extract saw significant improvements in total WOMAC, WOMAC-pain, WOMAC-stiffness, WOMAC-physical function, VAS pain, as well as a significant increase in walking performance, knee extension and flexion muscle strength on day 28, 56, and 84, compared to placebo.
"Our bioavailability data for both the 250 mg and 500 mg doses of Curcuwin Ultra+ translated to its efficacy for managing joint discomfort associated with mild knee osteoarthritis,” said Deshanie Rai, PhD, FACN, vice president, global scientific and regulatory affairs at OmniActive, in a press release. “The positive findings of this comprehensive study demonstrate that Curcuwin Ultra+ has an early effect and continues to support musculoskeletal functionality, including cartilage health, over the 12 weeks of supplementation.”
