Bergstrom Nutrition’s (Vancouver, WA) branded methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) ingredient OptiMSM has now received ISO 9001:2015 certification, establishing the safety and quality-control standards of its production process in line with the International Organization for Standarization’s (ISO) latest 9001 standard.

ISO 9001:2015 is an update to the previous standard, ISO 9001:2008, and companies now have three years to update from the 2008 to the 2015 standard if they want to keep their ISO 9001 status. In its announcement of the certification, Bergstrom Nutrition noted that it was among the first companies in the supplement industry to obtain the certification.

“Bergstrom Nutrition’s early adoption of the new requirements not only demonstrates its commitment to providing pure, quality products, but it also displays the MSM manufacturer’s industry leadership as one of the first supplement companies to receive the new certification,” the firm announced.

Bergstrom’s ISO 9001 audit was conducted by AIBI-CS, a division of AIB International. Bergstrom Nutrition says its previous work to achieve the FSSC 22000 certification went a long way toward fulfilling the new ISO 9001 requirements, although it was still “not an overnight process.” Compared to the 2008 iteration of the ISO 9001 certification, the 2015 version “places heightened importance on risk analysis and mitigation,” Bergstrom said.

“Abiding by all types of standards is the most important service we can provide our customers so their confidence in safety and regulatory compliance remains strong,” said Tim Hammond, Bergstrom Nutrition’s vice president of sales and marketing, in a press announcement. “More importantly, this confidence trickles down to end-users-consumers. The newly robust standards serve as a backbone to a good quality management system that will drive organizations to provide improved levels of quality.”
