Update from EFSA June Stakeholder Meeting
Ever since the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA; Parma, Italy) published its second batch of general health claims in February, much of the industry had been waiting for last week...s stakeholders meeting, where EFSA intended to clarify its procedures and offer advice on claims substantiation.
Ever since the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA; Parma, Italy) published its second batch of general health claims in February, much of the industry had been waiting for last week...s stakeholders meeting, where EFSA intended to clarify its procedures and offer advice on claims substantiation.
In the agency...s attempt to increase dialogue with industry, EFSA announced that it will begin offering online consultations and technical workshops 'to provide additional guidance to applicants in selected areas, such as gut and immune function, antioxidants, satiety, and mental function.'ÃÂ A workshop on gut and immune claims was announced to take place before the end of the year.
The meeting, which included experts from EFSA...s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition, and Allergies, included discourse on how the panel assesses claims substantiation, what makes data and studies considered 'pertinent,'ÃÂ and what physiological factors, good and bad, are considered for disease reduction claims.
