A recent press release from Oceanium, a developer in functional seaweed-based ingredients and materials, that a recent clinical study found promising results showing that Ocean Actives H+ may provide gut health benefits. Ocean Actives H+ is a prebiotic, seaweed-derived, patented, bioactive ingredient. The study found that the prebiotic ingredient may help improve gut microbiome balance by increasing beneficial bacteria and decreasing harmful microbes.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study took place over the course of 12 weeks. Participants were given each day a 250 mg placebo or 1 g of Ocean Actives H+. Data was gathered from participants throughout the 12 weeks at 0, 28 days, and 90 days. Results showed how supplementing with Ocean Actives H+ potentially can strengthen the microbiome in the gut and reducing bacteria that may harm it.
According to Oceanium and EDC BioSynergy, this is the first-ever clinical trial looking into how the fucoidan-enriched Saccharina latissimi extract, which is a naturally occurring bioactive compound stemming from brown seaweed; affects prebiotic activity. Research showed that daily consumption of the ingredient can help with improving digestion health, balancing the microbiome, and strengthening the gut barrier.
A patent in regard to the company’s green technology which extracts bioactives from marine macroalgae, has been filed among other patents that have been secured and help highlight the success made from ocean-derived products.
“This study represents a valuable advancement in our understanding of the health benefits of seaweed, building on centuries of evidence from the consumption of seaweed this study adds to the growing body of scientific evidence of seaweed’s potential and its dual role: improving health while being one of the most sustainable crops available,” said Dr. Charles Bavington, Oceanium co-founder & CTO, in a press release. “It was a privilege to work with the expert team at EDC BioSynergy and we’re thrilled to reveal these proprietary clinical results.”
