The study examined the effects of the hormone-free and plant-based alternative, called Bonolive from Solabia Nutrition, for improving postmenopausal symptoms.
In a November 14, 2024, press release, Solabia Nutrition (Maastricht, The Netherlands) announced the results of their most recent peer-reviewed clinical study on the effects of the olive leaf extract, Bonolive, on postmenopausal symptoms. Bonolive is an extract from Spanish Manzanilla olive leaves, standardized for 40% oleuropein. As noted in the press release, menopause results in a decline in estrogen, which can affect quality of life in physical and psychological ways. The study, “Olive Leaf Extract Supplementation Improves Postmenopausal Symptoms: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Parallel Study on Postmenopausal Women,” was published in November 2024 in the journal Nutrients.
Scientists at Maastricht University and at Solabia Nutrition conducted a trial involving 60 postmenopausal women ages 47-70. The participants took either a placebo or one capsule of 250 mg of Bonolive daily for 12 weeks. Measurements were taken during three study visits at baseline, six weeks, and 12 weeks and included the Menopause-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (MENQoL) to assess postmenopausal symptoms, the Hot Flash Interference scale (HFI), blood lipid profile measured in the blood serum, body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) with a DXA scan.
Results highlighted in the press release include:
Bonolive has also been shown to potentially help support joint health in people with knee pain.
