The ingredient is also approved to claim as a health benefit that it “helps stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria (such as bifidobacteria) in the intestine/gut.”
MSP Starch Products Inc. (MSP; Carberry, MB, Canada), announced that its resistant potato starch, Solnul, has secured Master File acceptance from Health Canada, allowing the ingredient to be sold as a prebiotic ingredient for Natural Health Products in the country. It is also approved to claim as a health benefit that it “helps stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria (such as bifidobacteria) in the intestine/gut.”
"This is a big win for resistant starch and for Canada. Getting Health Canada's approval is not just a great business achievement; it's also really meaningful to us,” stated chief growth officer of MSP Starch Products Inc., Jason Leibert, in a press release. “There's something special about selling right here at home, where we can directly support the health and well-being of Canadians while working toward our goal of bringing resistant starch back into modern diets.”
The ingredient is validated by a recent three-arm, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. The study found that consumption of 3.5 g per day of Solnul may produce a prebiotic effect. In the study, participants taking the resistant potato starch experienced significant changes in Bifidobacterium and Akkermansia after four weeks, compared to placebo.
