The FDA-recognized fiber ingredient received certification as low FODMAP, highlighting its use for consumers following IBS dietary recommendations.
In a January 21, 2025 press release1, food ingredients company Comet announced its patented prebiotic dietary fiber Arrabina had received the third party FODMAP Friendly certification. The ingredient Arrabina is a gluten-free Wheat Fiber Extract containing a mix of prebiotics including arabinoxylans, lignin, and polyphenols. The acronym FODMAP stands for certain short-chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that can be found in foods naturally or as additives and can include dietary fiber sources.
According to the press release, the FODMAP Accreditation program certifies FODMAP levels in food products have been tested in a laboratory to be low in FODMAPs, the only certification trademark to do so worldwide. The addition of the “FODMAP Friendly” logo allows consumers with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who are following a low FODMAP diet to identify Arrabina and packaged food products as low in FODMAPs. Regular dietary fiber consumption is part of IBS dietary recommendation to help regulate bowel movements.
“As both a nutrition expert and MONASH certified Registered Dietitian, I am keenly familiar with the digestive distress that one in seven people around the world experience,” stated Hannah Ackermann, vice president of marketing & nutrition affairs with Comet, in the press release. “The simple presence of the FODMAP Friendly logo lends a helping hand for these people to easily identify foods that are free from potentially triggering ingredients. It means they can spend less time reading labels and more time enjoying foods that are free from FODMAPs."
As noted in the press release, IBS affects 10 – 15% of people in the US and while the cause is not fully known, symptoms of digestive discomfort include belly pain, bloating, and cramping.
"Customers who include Arrabina in their product formulations would align with current consumer interest in a low FODMAP diet while allowing them to provide necessary nutritional benefits of fiber,” added Bob Turner, vice president of sales for Comet. “This certification offers recognizable validation that our Wheat Fiber Extract is comfortably digested by people sensitive to FODMAPs."
The press release also noted that consumer interest in “low FODMAP diets” had recently increased, with TikTok queries of the term and hashtag reaching 61 million views, and “irritable bowel syndrome” had logged an average of 550,000 queries in monthly search volume on US Google Search over the past year.
In November 2024, Arrabina also received another third party certification, the NutraStrong Prebiotic Verified product certification, verifying its health, sustainability, and content claims2.
Recently, Comet published its 2025 trend prediction report3, which highlighted microbiome and prebiotic developments, and offered insights for product launches and connections with consumers throughout the year 2025. The report was created with data analysis of social media listening and market data.
