Stratum Nutrition launched a new eggshell membrane collagen ingredient called Ovolux.
Stratum Nutrition, a supplier of product formulations for both human and pet health, recently published in a press release announcing the launch of their Ovolux ingredient1 as well as the publication of a study demonstrating the ingredient's skin, hair, and nail benefits.
According to the press release1, “Ovolux is a premium, upcycled, USDA-sourced eggshell membrane ingredient that supports healthy hair, skin, and nails—nurturing beauty from within.” The most recent trial1 highlighted clinical results such as, helping improve skin properties in regard to hydration, texture, and hair strength.
In December 2024, the Journal of Cosmetics, Dermatological Sciences and Applications, published the study titled, “Ovolux Brand Eggshell Membrane Reduces the Clinical Signs of Aging by Improving Skin, Hair & Fingernail Appearance, Texture, and Biomechanical Properties: A Single Center, Randomized, Double Blind, Placebo Controlled Clinical Trial.”
The purpose of the study was to, “…evaluate the efficacy of an oral unhydrolyzed eggshell membrane (ESM) ingredient (branded Ovolux) versus placebo on both objective and subjective markers of skin aging in middle-aged and senior adults, and also to assess the possible benefits of Ovolux on the health of hair and fingernails,”1. In the clinical study participants either consumed 400 mg of Ovolux powder which contained 300 mg of eggshell membrane powder or placebo consisting of Psyllium husk fiber powder, via oral route once a day. In the beginning of the project, participants were required to fill out skin, hair, and fingernail 10-point ordinal questionnaires and then repeated again after 6 weeks and then 12 weeks of taking the treatment1. To measure skin hydration, researchers1 utilized a “Corneometer CM825 probe, TEWL was measured with a Tewameter® TM300 probe, and elasticity, firmness, and visco-elasticity were measured with a Cutometer probe, all attached to a Courage + Khazaka (Cologne, Germany) Cutometer MPA 580 with CTplus control software.” Researchers then replicated measurements three times for each parameter of the temporal fossa area of the face, this is also known as the “crow’s feet area”1.
Participants of the study ranged in ages between 35 to 70 years old and did not suffer from any chronic skin conditions. Aside from questionnaires, they were also required to stop taking any prescription and over-the-counter medications that could affect the study results. The study began in November 2023 and had a final follow-up with the 63 participants in March 2024. The data from the study showed that with taking Ovolux once a day at 400 mg, “…provided significant broad-based improvements in critical biomechanical skin properties versus placebo, including elasticity, firmness, and viscoelasticity. These effects, along with improvement in skin hydration, were observed as early as 6 weeks and continued through the end of the 12-week study,”1. Results from the placebo did not reflect similar results.
Ovolux may provide a solution to help interested consumers who are looking for collagen products which will help with holistic wellness. “Ovolux is ideal for brands seeking to differentiate their products with a science-backed ingredient that resonates with consumers focused on skin vitality and sustainable living,” as mentioned in the press release1.
