In a January 28, 2025, press release1, Osteo Bi-Flex highlighted findings from a clinical trial on the herbal extract, Boswellia serrata, a scented sap from the Boswellia serrata tree. The extract is an ingredient in the joint care supplement, Osteo Bi-Flex, in the form of its proprietary Joint Shield 5-LOXIN Advanced composition, which contains high concentrations of the boswellic acid, AKBA.

Presented at the 2024 American Society for Nutrition Annual Meeting, the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm clinical study examined the effects of Boswellia serrata on various aspects of joint health, including joint comfort, inflammation, functional mobility, and knee joint cartilage. The adult participants, ages 40-75, received a daily capsule of 100 mg of the extract for six months, with joint comfort and mobility measurements taken 30 days into the study. The study took place at the Department of Orthopedics at Lakshmi Hospital in India with both male and female participants.

Benefits were seen in improved joint mobility and comfort, with support seen for knee joint cartilage and healthy inflammatory response.

"The new study presented at The American Society for Nutrition adds to the positive research for the benefits of Boswellia serrata for joint health," said Krysmaru Araujo Torres, MD, head of medical affairs, Nestlé Health Science, maker of Osteo Bi-Flex, in the press release. "We are impressed to see that this study included magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure joint space, cartilage thickness, and cartilage volume. The study showed that the participants supplemented with the novel Boswellia serrata extract experienced a benefit in promoting their cartilage health. In contrast, MRI measurements in participants provided the placebo did not result in any benefit. We're looking forward to communicating these findings with consumers who are searching for a daily-use, non-drug option to help support their joint health."

The press release also noted other human studies that supported joint health improvement after taking 5-LOXIN® Advanced.

The American Society for Nutrition Annual Meeting is a multi-day event featuring research, sessions, and more on the science and application of nutrition2.
