Supplementing with NR can help the body’s cells produce nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), an essential molecule in every living cell, and thus helps the body generate cellular energy.

ChromaDex (Irvine, CA) has launched a new dietary supplement for the healthcare practitioner channel featuring the company’s trademarked Niagen healthy-aging ingredient. The company says Niagen is the world’s first and only known FDA-safety reviewed form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), which is a member of the vitamin B3 family. Supplementing with NR can help the body’s cells produce nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), an essential molecule in every living cell, and thus helps the body generate cellular energy.
“NAD+ enables cells to generate cellular energy from the food that we eat,” ChromaDex explains on its website. “It is also an important substrate for a variety of NAD+-consuming enzymes (including PARPs and sirtuins). Even though scientists have known about this molecule for more than 100 years, there are more studies being published on NAD+ than ever before. This resurgence of scientific interest is partly sparked by research showing NAD+ can decrease over time and under metabolic stress. Some scientists even think that declining NAD+ levels may play a major role in the aging process.” ChromaDex says stores of NAD can decrease with age and under metabolic stress, which is detrimental because NAD otherwise helps increase cellular metabolism and energy production, helps maintain healthy mitochondria, and promotes cellular repair.
ChromaDex introduced its branded NR ingredient Niagen more than five years ago targeting the healthcare practitioner audience, originally operating under a marketing agreement with healthcare practitioner brand Thorne Research.
Now, ChromaDex has introduced a new consumer supplement featuring Niagen, called Tru Niagen Pro. The company says Tru Niagen Pro is now available for distribution by healthcare practitioners. Each capsule contains 300 mg of Niagen.
One practitioner, Phillip Milgram, MD, medical director of the NAD Treatment Center in San Diego, CA, in a ChromaDex press release commented on the importance of NAD support. “I have dedicated my career to increasing patients’ NAD levels for multiple medical indications, health, and longevity. We are very excited to offer Tru Niagen Pro through our clinic. The growing body of science pointing to the importance of maintaining NAD levels via the use of daily supplementation of clinically proven precursors such as NR continues to build, and we are delighted to be associated with ChromaDex, the pioneers of NR development. We have a clinically proven dose of NR to deliver an effective increase in NAD in a single capsule.”
ChromaDex also announced that it has signed a distribution agreement with Natural Partners Fullscript (Scottsdale, AZ), who will distribute Tru Niagen products to its network of over 40,000 healthcare practitioners. ChromaDex has also created an online hub where practitioners can access a searchable database of more than 100 published preclinical and clinical studies on NAD and NR for human health.
