Amazon superfoods brand Sambazon has introduced a “Shop Smart” checklist of what consumers should look for when trying to shop for non-GMO foods.
Amazon superfoods brand Sambazon has introduced a “Shop Smart” checklist of what consumers should look for when trying to shop for non-GMO foods. Earlier this month, the company donated $10,000 to support California’s Proposition 37 campaign to enact GMO labeling.
The checklist is part of the brand’s new social media campaign, Knowledge Is Bliss, which includes other national food brands supporting non-GMO. The other brands include Mary’s Gone Crackers, Nature’s Path, Earth Balance, Vapour Organic Beauty, and Uncle Matt’s Organic, as well as Just Label It, a national coalition dedicated to mandating federal labeling for GMOs.
The “Shop Smart” non-GMO checklist includes tips such as looking for The Non-GMO Project logo, buying organic, and looking for Price Look Up (PLU) codes on produce because five-digit codes starting with an “8” indicate GMOs, while “9” indicates organic and non-GMO. Also, the checklist advises watching for the “Big Four” most commonly GMO crops: corn, soybeans, canola, and cottonseed.
