Naturex (Avignon, France) and Olene Life Sciences (Chennai, India) are collaborating to bring to market Gingest, a highly standardized new ginger (Zingiber officinale) extract powder that targets natural digestive health.
The collaboration is a product of Ingenium, an Open Innovation Initiative that Naturex launched last year to accelerate technological breakthrough by sourcing and supporting new ideas from start-up partners like Olene.
Olene developed Gingest using its patented Aqueosome processing technology, which allows for the safe production of ginger oleoresin powder without the use of solvents, and which purportedly yields a finished active-compound standardization level greater than 26%.
According to a Naturex press statement, this represents a leap forward in the nutrition industry, as creation of a highly standardized ginger powder extract had heretofore eluded industry scientists. Thanks to Olene’s processing advance, a small 160-mg capsule can now deliver an impressive dose of key ginger actives, like gingerols and shogoals.
With ginger emerging as an in-demand botanical backed by both centuries of safe use and more than 40 clinical studies supporting its digestive-health benefits and antiemetic effect, the commercialization of this new ginger powder offers a promising strategy for addressing the digestive problems that continue to plague millions worldwide.
In the press statement, Alexis Manfré, global category manager, health & nutrition, Naturex, praised the company’s partnership with Olene as helping it “bring to market a new natural digestive health solution that delivers on all of the dietary supplement industry’s key priorities: traceability, purity, efficacy, high levels of concentration in small volumes, and ease of use in multiple applications.”
In the same statement, Vivek A. Parachur, cofounder and CEO of Olene, credited Naturex with being “a very strategic and resourceful partner in bringing our Aqueosome technology and in particular, Gingest, to the market. We are very happy to be partnering with Naturex, a company that embodies the same values as us in its work culture to ensure that the consumer gets the most scientifically validated product.” Olene currently has three other products in development using its Aqueosome process.
