Abbott Laboratories (Abbott Park, IL) has voluntarily recalled various products containing Similac powder infant formula after an internal review found beetles in the product chain.
The company initiated the nationwide recall on Sept. 22 after beetles (larvae and adults) were found on September 16 at one of the company’s manufacturing facilities.
In its recall statement, FDA stated the following: “FDA has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.”
A list of the affected products can be found here.
