The much-anticipated 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans will be announced on Monday, January 31, by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. USDA and HHS update the guidelines every five years.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans reflect the federal government’s evidence-based nutritional guidelines for improved nutrition and physical activity to promote health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and reduce the prevalence of obesity. The document assists policy makers, nutrition professionals, food-assistance program administrators, the food industry, scientists and academics, and the nutrition-focused media with a consistent, science-based foundation for their nutrition efforts.
