GC Rieber VivoMega (Norway) has announced the completion and grand opening of its new omega-3 manufacturing facility in Norway. The grand opening took place on May 24, 2024. The new facility allows the company to double its output of the triglyceride form of marine omega-3s EPA and DHA and certified vegan EPA & DHA algal oils.

The $75 million investment, originally announced in May of 2022, included:

  • A 38,000 metric ton storage tank park
  • An electric steam boiler allowing its three facilities to run on 100% renewable energy
  • Additional heating capabilities to help maintain the quality of the oils and allow for easier extraction in winter
  • Additional nitrogen to remove oxygen for improved sensory profiles

“This is an exciting time for GC Rieber VivoMega and our customers,” said Snorre Glærum Strand, CEO at GC Rieber VivoMega, in a press release. “With the supply of fish oils starting to normalize somewhat thanks to improvements in ongoing fishery, and the growing demand for sustainable, traceable, high-quality omega-3 increases, this new facility allows us to meet the varying consumer needs, including a vegan alternative EPA & DHA.”

Strand explains that the company minimized its ecological footprint by utilizing some of the existing infrastructure, including docks, tanks, and laboratories. The improved campus aligns with EU Green Deal initiatives and the UN Global Compact guidelines. GC Rieber VivoMega is also SEDEX-certified. According to the company, the expansion makes GC Rieber the world’s largest fish and algae manufacturing storage facility.
