DolCas Biotech LLC (Landing, NJ) has forged a partnership with Moroccan olive oil manufacturer Atlas Olive Oils to be the sole U.S. distributor and trade-name holder for TruOliv, an organic, kosher, and halal-certified extract of olive fruits, which includes the skin, flesh, and pit, as well as mature and juvenile leaves. Rich in polyphenols, TruOliv is standardized to 10% hydroxytyrosol and 17% oleuropein, with background measurable levels of other polyphenols such as tyrosol and olecanthal. According to a press release, published studies show that the extract can support joint health, inflammation, cardiometabolic risk, blood sugar, and antimicrobial activity.
The leaves and fruit of olives have long been exploited independently for their health benefits in traditional medicine. “Part of the novelty of TruOliv lies in the coexistence of these components in one dietary supplement,” explains Shavon Jackson-Michel, director of medical and scientific affairs at DolCas Biotech, in a press release.
Atlas stumbled upon TruOliv after the first harvest of a newly acquired olive grove, which yielded an unusually bitter extra virgin olive oil. They were able to later attribute this bitterness to the oil’s high polyphenol content. Atlas was also able to link the polyphenol content to the terrain the grove grew on, which is a hot and inhospitable rocky desert, and the trees’ ability to thrive thanks to a secondary metabolite they’re forced to produce to survive. Besides the ingredient’s nutritional profile, TruOliv is sustainable, solvent-free, and free of bioenhancers, excipients, or adjuvants.
“In an intensely competitive market, we’ve already strategically and successfully positioned two blockbuster botanicals: the whole-turmeric-derived curcumin-essential oils brand BCM-95, and the diverse-spectrum, naturally enriched boswellic acid complex BosPure,” said Jackson-Michel. “Knowing that polyphenols positively influence the inflammation and oxidative stress at the root of many modern-day diseases, we look forward to offering U.S. consumers TruOliv as a means of addressing those concerns.”
