The carbohydrate source is an alternative to traditional ingredients and supports several health benefits.
In a January 16, 2025, press release1, Beneo showcased its low glycemic syrup, BeneoCarb S, an alternative ingredient that can be used in pet foods and snacks. Derived from sugar beet, BeneoCarb S is a co-product of Beneo’s smart carbohydrate manufacturing, and features isomaltulose and trehalulos, low-glycaemic disaccharides, which generate lower glycaemic and insulinemic responses. This feature has potential to appeal to pet owners focusing on the health of their pet food, as the low-gylcemic carbohydrates can help support balanced blood glucose management and support weight management.
According to a previous study2 mentioned in the press release, isomaltulose has been demonstrated to be a suitable ingredient for dog food, with ingestions causing a lower rise in blood glucose.
Additionally, the stability of pet food and can be supported by the antioxidative and water activity-reducing effects of BeneoCarb S while replacing the additives glycerine and propylene glycol in moist and semi-moist pet foods. Additionally, its low viscosity enables easy processing.
Its recently demonstrated browning properties can make it a natural alternative to food colorings, with the ability to replace caramel additives. It can be used as an alternative binder to glucose syrup and has a honey-like flavor.
“Interestingly, despite inflation, and rising costs of pet food, pet owners don’t want to compromise on ingredient quality, nutritional value, taste and health claims,” stated Dr. Maygane Ronsmans, Product Manager Animal Nutrition at BENEO, in the press release. “With owners prioritizing the health of their companion animals, producers of pet food need to incorporate functional ingredients that can deliver proven nutritional and technical benefits. BeneoCarb S enables producers to create healthier pet foods and snacks, that are naturally coloured and taste great.”
BeneoCarb S, already a livestock feed ingredient, is included as ‘isomaltulose molasses’ in the EU Catalogue of Feed Materials.
Beneo also recently commented on results from a literature review with meta-analysis on the effects of chicory root supplementation in weight management.
