Arla Foods Ingredients (Viby J, Denmark) is offering a way for manufacturers of oral nutrition supplements (ONS) to create these medical-nutrition drinks in a format closer to juice instead of the standard milky-type drink. Currently, the company says, the majority of ONS drinks are not juice-style drinks but rather milky drinks, since the average protein content of an ONS juice-style drink is just 4.2 g per 100 g.
However, says Arla, its Lacprodan BLG-100 ingredient can help deliver both high protein content at 7% and high amounts of essential amino acids that ONS consumers need, while still maintaining the organoleptic properties critical for juices.
Lacprodan BLG-100 is a 100%-pure beta-lactoglobulin ingredient containing 7 g of protein per 100 g. It is rich in essential amino acids, including leucine (1.13 g per 100 g). Due to its reduced astringency compared to typical ONS juice-style products, the ingredient also creates a more pleasant mouthfeel in juice-style ONS drinks, which the company says increases product compliance among medical nutrition users.
