PrimaVie, a purified shilajit ingredient supplied by Natreon (New Brunswick, NJ), has shown research potential for use in sports nutrition and anti-aging products in the past. But the results of a recently-published study suggest it may also have a place in male sexual health products.
Writing in the journal Andrologia, researchers reported that men who received 250 mg of PrimaVie twice daily for 90 days showed a significant increase in testosterone levels over those who took the placebo.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted at the J.B. Roy State Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital (Kolkata, India) and included 75 healthy volunteers aged 45-55. For 90 days, the men either took PrimaVie or a placebo, with total and free testosterones estimated from fasting blood drawn from each volunteer at 0, 30, 60, and 90 days into the intervention period.
Researchers found that after 90 days, the PrimaVie group showed a 20% increase in total testosterone levels and a 19% increase in free testosterone levels. Natreon says the results “suggest that PrimaVie would be an ideal ingredient for male sexual health products.”
According to Natreon, PrimaVie purified shilajit “consists of dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs), DBP-chromoproteins (DECPs), fulvic acid, and forty different trace metals.” Shilajit is found in the Himalayas.
