A new testing method can determine if your glucosamine ingredient is derived from shellfish or a vegetable source.
Ethical Naturals Inc. (San Anselmo, CA), which manufactures GreenGrown vegetable glucosamine, has patented a test method for identifying the source of glucosamine ingredients, whether from vegetable or shellfish.
The method creates an objective process for complying with label claims regarding ingredient sourcing. According to the company, glucosamine sourced from shellfish is cheaper to produce, but can be substituted for the higher-value vegetable alternative. Proper ingredient verification is also important for consumers who are vegetarian or who do not consume shellfish for any number of reasons.
“‘Nature Verified by Science’ is our key founding mission statement, and we use validated methods for testing the key quality assurance markers on every product that we sell,” said Ethical Naturals president Cal Bewicke. “We are very pleased to be able to now add this additional level of objective identification to our Non-GMO GreenGrown glucosamine HCL and sulfate products.”
Ethical Naturals credits its QC and R&D director Lora Xiong, MS, for developing the process.
