Enzymotec Launches TMAO-Free Krill Oil
The brand has debuted an improved grade of its K-Real krill oil that it says is free of both trimethylamine (TMA) and trimethylamine-oxide (TMAO).

Enzymotec (Migdal HaEmeq, Israel) has announced an improved-grade version of its K-Real krill oil, which it says delivers enhanced levels of freshness by being “T-free.” The krill ingredient, which is produced through Enzymotec’s Multi-Stage Oil-Extraction (MSO) 2.0 process, contains no trimethylamine (TMA) or trimethylamine-oxide (TMAO)-hence the term T-free.
TMA is the molecule that lends the unpleasant smell to rotting fish, while TMAO is a compound found in many marine products that may be linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, Enzymotec explains. And as awareness of TMAO’s dangerous potential has risen in recent years, so too has demand for T-free supplements, according to the firm.
Enzymotec also reports that its own research with an in vitro stomach model found that K-Real is more resistant to oxidation that competing krill products-a crucial factor because the rate of oxidation is tied to the efficacy of krill oil when consumed in a supplement product.
Additionally, news of the improved-grade K-Real launch comes just months after Enzymotec announced its K-Real krill oil meets the criteria to carry a “low sodium” claim in Europe.
“MSO 2.0 is a unique, multi-stage oil-extraction process that results in a krill oil with exceptional freshness, superb oxidation residence, and which is both T-free and may bear the low-sodium claim in the EU,” says Avner Avissara, vice president of marketing and sales for Enzymotec’s nutrition division, in a press release. “K-Real responds to consumer demand for dietary supplement products that are efficacious, safe, and easy to use. It is produced according to USP monograph, and I believe that no other krill oil delivers such a compelling package of benefits.”
