Less than two months after cranberry supplier Fruit d’Or Nutraceuticals (Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, QC, Canada) showcased a first-ever cranberry probiotic peanut butter cup, the company announced it has combined cranberry and probiotics in yet another new product type. This time, it’s a gummy that combines Fruit d’Or’s CranNaturelle cranberry seed powder with the LactoSpore probiotic strain from Sabinsa Corp. (East Windsor, NJ).
“This gummy is a new delivery system to help promote good digestive health,” says Stephen Lukawski, director of sales and business development for Fruit d’Or and CEO of RS Specialty Ingredients. “We’re bringing two science-based ingredients together and harnessing the unique benefits of cranberry seed prebiotics powder.”
Each gummy contains one billion CFUs of LactoSpore (Bacillus coagulans MTCC 5856) and 250 mg of CranNaturelle cranberry powder, combining to form a blend known as LactoCran. The cranberry powder acts as a powerful prebiotic food source for LactoSpore, with testing suggesting it is more effective than fructooligosaccharides (FOS) as a prebiotic, according to Fruit d’Or.
“Results show that Bacillus coagulans probiotic strain from Sabinsa has 200% more activity growth when combined with the cranberry than FOS,” Lukawski says. He adds that the cranberry seed powder produces no gastrointestinal side effects, as is sometimes the case with other prebiotics, such as inulin.
CranNaturelle provides 40%–50% fiber and 20%–25% protein, as well as carbon and nitrogen that provides fuel for the Bacillus coagulans strain. Fruit d’Or says the combination of protein, fiber, probiotics, and cranberry prebiotics in a gummy is all in keeping with “today’s hottest consumer demands.”
“This is another way to showcase cranberry seed powder as the next star ingredient in the dietary supplement industry,” Lukawski says. The product is also vegan, non-GMO, and organic, according to Fruit d’Or.
